OvidMD search tips

Start broad Enter a broad term or name of a medical condition.

Refine your query Try adding more terms to help narrow down the available results.

Specific query search using simple terms or complex questions Hypertension
Do probiotics decrease the risk of developing antibiotic associated diarrhoea in kids?

Is acetaminophen superior to ibuprofen in the treatment of children with fever?

Navigate to the best content type Books, journals and evidence-based guidelines all answer different types of questions. Use the Content Type navigator to find the type of content most appropriate for your information needs.

Find the most recent articles

Use the navigator to limit the results to last 12 months, last 3 years or last 5 years.

Alternatively you can start with the patient’s primary problem

How do I diagnose? How do I treat? What complications may arise? By starting with the primary problem, you can usually get a good starting point, and sometimes you get right to the answer.

Add the intervention you are considering

Add any interventions that you may be considering and run the search again.

Are you considering any alternatives?

If any articles compare the alternatives to the intervention you are considering in the context of your patient’s primary problem.

Calculators

You can search on various Calculators for emergency drugs, renal function estimation, general infusions, lab values, anti-infective dosing etc.

BMJ Best Practice search tips

If you know the name of the disorder, click on Show conditions. Click on the first letter of the disorder's name.
To find information on acute pancreatitis click on P and scroll down the list of conditions.

BMJ Best Practice includes the latest information on prevention, diagnosis and treatment
You can click on A and scroll down to Acute pancreatitis.
Alternatively, you can search for the information you want.

When searching by symptom or sign, it is recommended that you use a maximum of two predominant signs or symptoms in your search to return a full list of search results.

When searching for more than one term, you do not need to type AND in between each, as 'and' is automatically implied.

If you want to return results containing just one of several terms type OR between each term. It's important that you use all caps when typing OR otherwise your request will not be recognised.

When searching for specific phrases include double quote marks ("") around each phrase, e.g. ' "shortness of breath" OR "chest pain" '.
You can refine your search results for 'All results' by clicking on the specific tabs for 'Conditions', 'Diagnosis', 'Treatment', 'Evidence', 'Drug database', or 'Guidelines'.
